If you’ve ever felt sore a day or two after a workout, you’ve likely experienced DOMS. That tight, aching feeling in your muscles often shows up after pushing your body harder than usual.
At ENZED Fitness, we train real people for real results. DOMS is a normal part of getting stronger, but it’s important to understand what it is and how to manage it.
What is DOMS
DOMS stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. It usually starts 12 to 24 hours after training and can last up to 72 hours. It’s most noticeable after a tough session, a new exercise, or when returning from a break.
DOMS feels like a deep, dull muscle ache or stiffness. It’s different from sharp or sudden pain and usually shows up when moving or stretching the affected area.
What causes DOMS
Training, especially strength-based training, causes small tears in muscle fibres. These micro-tears trigger a repair process that makes muscles stronger. This repair process can cause soreness.
DOMS is more likely when you:
- Do eccentric movements like lowering in a squat
- Try new exercises
- Increase weight or reps
- Return after a break
At ENZED Fitness, our muscle group splits are designed to create the right amount of muscle stress and recovery so you can keep progressing without burning out.
Is DOMS a sign of a good workout
Not necessarily. Soreness can show your body is adapting, but it’s not the only sign of progress. You don’t need to feel sore to know a session worked.
What matters more is getting stronger, moving better, staying consistent, and feeling more capable week to week. We build our programs to deliver real progress without leaving you constantly sore or fatigued.
How to reduce DOMS
While you can’t always prevent soreness, you can manage it better with a few key strategies.
- Stay active. Gentle movement like walking or cycling boosts blood flow and helps recovery.
- Hydrate. Muscles recover better when you’re well hydrated.
- Eat well. Protein, carbs, and micronutrients all support repair and muscle function.
- Sleep. Your body repairs most during deep sleep, so aim for 7 to 9 hours.
- Use tools. Try foam rolling, massage, warm baths, or gentle stretching to relieve tightness.
- Train smart. Follow a plan that progresses gradually and allows muscle groups to recover properly.
Is it DOMS or an injury
DOMS is general muscle soreness. An injury usually feels sharp, sudden, or gets worse with movement. Pain in a joint, swelling, or pain that lasts beyond five days could be a sign of injury.
If you’re unsure, speak with a coach. At ENZED Fitness, we help members adjust their training to stay safe and keep progressing.
Can you train with DOMS
Yes, if the soreness is mild. You can often train other muscle groups while the sore ones recover. That’s why we train specific areas on different days. It allows you to stay consistent without overloading the same muscles.
If soreness is severe, recovery movement or an easier session is a better option.
The bottom line
DOMS is normal. It means your muscles are responding to training and getting stronger. You don’t need to chase soreness, but when it shows up, know that it’s part of the process.
